Acupuncture is a complete medical system that has been
used for thousands of years on a large segment of the
world's population making acupuncture the most widely
practiced and thoroughly tested medicine in history with
recorded clinical results. Dr. Harounian uses
acupuncture, flower essences, and homeopathy to treat
the underlying cause of a symptom and improve the
quality of life. Acupuncture is a process which involves
the insertion of pre-sterilized, nontoxic, and
disposable fine needles into points that are strategic
conductors of electromagnetic signals.
Dr. Yasmin Harounian's client testimony
The Point of
Return: Healing through Acupuncture
Imbalances in our body can lead to
premature aging, injury, and disease. Pain is just one
of the ways our body communicates that it is imbalanced.
At Co-Creative Synergy, we use acupuncture to balance
your energy channels to relieve pain, promote health,
enhance beauty and offer you hope in areas where
conventional methods sometimes fail.
Acupuncture
has been used by the Chinese for 5,000 years as a
primary method of healing physical and mental ailments.
During the Chinese Communist Revolution in the mid-20th
century, however, a great number of documents relating
to acupuncture theory and practice were destroyed.
Fortunately, some of this information and some
techniques were preserved in the Korean application of
acupuncture. Dr. Yasmin Harounian, L.Ac. (RI), our
licensed acupuncturist and health practitioner, has
studied both Korean and Chinese acupuncture - one of the
several ways in which she has distinguished herself from
her colleagues. Her extensive studies enable her to draw
from a wealth of theories and practices to meet the
needs of her clients. Approximately 80-100% of Dr.
Harounian's patients experience improvements in their
health as a direct result of her treatments.
If you are unfamiliar with the details
of acupuncture, you are likely not alone. Although,
acupuncture has been used mainly by the Chinese for
5,000 years as a primary method of healing for physical
and mental ailments; it has only been used in the U.S.
for about 30 years. Here are some quick facts that you
might find interesting:
In 2002, the World Health Organization (WHO)
reviewed randomized controlled acupuncture studies
and put their stamp of approval on acupuncture for
treating numerous diseases.
Studies have proven that acupuncture is very safe.
For example, The York acupuncture safety study
concluded that only 1 of every 1000 people had
minimal adverse effects as a result of treatment.
These effects included dizziness, perspiration or
discomfort after treatment and were most likely due
to low blood pressure. These symptoms resolved on
their own.
The York
acupuncture safety study: Prospective survey of
34,000 treatments by traditional acupuncturists.
Retrieved March 15, 2011.
Acupuncture is not
recommended for those with bleeding disorders or
those on anticoagulants (blood thinners).
Acupuncture does not interfere with conventional
medical treatment. Many physicians are referring
their patients to licensed acupuncturists to assist
their patients on their healing journey.
We look forward to showing you
through acupuncture the potential your body has to heal
itself. Feel free to browse this page for more

Preparing for Your
Visit

appointment,

Your Visit
Your initial visit will take about an
hour and will consist of a consultation - including a
medical history review - and your acupuncture treatment.
Subsequent visits will typically be scheduled as 1-hour
sessions, the amount of time needed for treatment.
During your treatment, very thin, disposable needles are
inserted into specific points on your body while you are
lying on a comfortable table. The needles are so thin
that they do not cause pain; however, you may feel a
sensation similar to a hair being plucked or possibly
some tingling or numbness. The needles are left in the
body for 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the type of
treatment that is offered.
The needles are not meant to draw
blood, and only occasionally you will see a tiny drop of
blood when they are removed. Our acupuncture services
are usually performed over the course of a few weeks or
months, depending on the condition being addressed.
People typically become more relaxed during the course
of a session and in subsequent sessions.
Relief from emotional, mental, and
physical symptoms is common after being treated with
acupuncture, and many people claim to experience inner
life changes. A significant number of our clients return
to us for treatment beyond what was initially sought.
According to a 2001 study by the
British Acupuncture Council of 132 acupuncture patients,
researchers reported that,
physical symptoms were relieved 75% of the time;
emotional and mental symptoms were relieved 67% of
the time;
"inner life changes" were experienced by 54% and 27%
patients felt major life changes; and
during the course of their treatment, 42% of the
patients decided to use acupuncture to treat another
illness.

2001 7(3):261-8.
Also,
according to the World Health Organization,
acupuncture is undoubtedly effective for 28
diseases, including headaches, post-operative
surgical pain, post-operative dental pain and
chemotherapy nausea and vomiting;
acupuncture is effective for 63 diseases. This
category includes stroke rehabilitation, chronic
back pain, neck pain, sciatica, gastrointestinal
disorders, lung conditions, tennis elbow, arthritis,
gynecological issues and menstrual cramps, carpal
tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, high blood
sugar, some sports injuries, anxiety, depression,
allergies, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome and
jaw pain. Nervous conditions and disorders of the
eyes, nose and throat also fall under this category;
and
Western medicine cannot treat 9 diseases very well,
so acupuncture is worth trying in those cases.
Fibromyalgia and pain from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
are included in this category.

Furthermore, acupuncture can be used
for motor vehicle injuries (recovery), bladder
infection, stress-related disorders, sinusitis,
conjunctivitis, smoking addictions, constipation,
diarrhea, Meniere's disease, obesity, weight control,
infertility and many other conditions.
Traditional Chinese medicine is based
on the theory that every living person (or animal) has
life force called chi, which circulates through the body
and accesses over 300 "switching points" along the way.
These acupuncture switching points can be switched on or
off to affect the total vitality of the body including
your energy levels and health. Illness is the result of
an imbalance of the chi on one or more of the 14
different meridians that connect these points. When
needles are inserted into these switching points in a
particular manner, the energy flow can return to normal.
Health and vitality is the result of balancing the chi
on the meridians.
Science
has discovered that acupuncture may affect several of
the body's signaling systems. Western medicine is
starting to understand the mechanisms leading to the
positive results of acupuncture. For example, Eastern
medicine has long understood that acupuncture often
alleviates or eliminates pain; but Western medicine is
now partly able to explain this in terms of endorphins
being released by the body at needle point. Endorphins
are neurotransmitters and are the same chemicals in the
body that are responsible for the “runner's high.”
Western medicine has also begun
studying acupuncture's ability to stimulate the nervous
system and activate the body's extensive cell signaling
system to control pain and the perception of pain.
Signaling systems are complex and involve small proteins
and chemicals such as neurotransmitters that are
released at one site and travel to other locations to
affect metabolism, hormone production, physiology, and
brain chemistry. These systems are thought to be
responsible for health, disease and recovery.
The micro-processes of how acupuncture
is able to affect the body will likely continue to be
elucidated by research; but the effectiveness of
acupuncture is already receiving strong support in
modern medicine as illustrated by the report from the
World Health Organization Report, “Review & Analysis of
Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials” retrieved on
March 15, 2011:
Acupuncture is undoubtedly effective for 28

surgical pain, post-operative dental pain and

Still, for many people, the thousands

The World Health Organization
estimates that more people
worldwide use acupuncture more often than any other form
of health care, and has found that one of the advantages
of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse side
effects are substantially lower than that of many drugs
or other accepted medical procedures used for the same
condition and the benefits of acupuncture are very high.
Dr. Harounian believes there is a new, more aware
consciousness today, which is not based on the use of
drugs that are made to suppress the signs and symptoms
of a disease, which only pushes the disease farther into
the body. The highest level of healing is to address
health issues by taking responsibility for one’s health
and consciousness.Using
hair-fine needles to stimulate certain points,
acupuncture has been proven to create physiological and
biochemical changes in the nervous system and brain.
Specific points can strengthen the immune system, reduce
stress, relieve pain, strengthen internal organs,
increase metabolism for weight loss, improve
detoxification and release endorphins – the body’s
natural ‘feel good’ hormone. You will be pleasantly
surprised in how relaxed you are as you begin the
natural healing process. If you're still fearful of
needles, Dr. Harounian uses nutripuncture which is
needle-less acupuncture, she also believes many people
suffer from food sensitivities and is a very big
advocate of the Food Sensitivity Test.
Yasmin also believes
eastern medicine can work concurrently with western
medicine and can have synergistic effects that produce
an even greater benefit than the sum of their individual
parts. Major
benefits of acupuncture include: drug-free
pain relief, weight loss and detoxification, disease
prevention, and treating the cause as well as the
symptoms. Acupuncture offers a holistic approach to
illness which links the body/mind/emotions, and
effectively treats many common ailments. The World
Health Organization recommends acupuncture as an
effective treatment for over 150 medical ailments,
including allergies, respiratory conditions,
gastrointestinal disorders, gynecological problems,
nervous conditions and disorders of the eyes, nose and
throat.
Acupuncture has been
used in the treatment of alcoholism and substance abuse
and has proven effective and cost-efficient in remedying
headaches and chronic back or arthritic pain. Eastern
medicine represents the cumulative clinical experience
and time-tested theories of five millennia of continuous
practice by acupuncturists. It remains the world’s
oldest, safest, and most comprehensive system of medical
care, developing as dynamically today as it has
throughout its long history. If you are committed to
taking control of your health, schedule a consultation
and learn how a 5,000 year old, time-tested medicine can
work for you. We will happily verify
acupuncture
benefits through your insurance.
In a recent publication of the
Asco Post, January 2012, the magazine of the
American Society of Clinical Oncology - ASCO, there is and article
entitled: "Integrative
Oncology: Essential to Cancer Care". They define
Integrative oncology as the synthesis of main stream
cancer treatments and complementary therapies
like
acupuncture, meditation, self-hypnosis, fitness and
nutrition. The article also says that in the '60 and
'70 the concept of an expanded approach to cancer
treatment "encompassing body, mind, and soul", was
adopted by many cancer patients. Acupuncture is one of
the integrative and complementary healing therapies used
Integrative Onclogy.
Herbs
Herbal formulas and flower essences stimulate the body's
own
natural healing process to relieve symptoms. The
advantage of using herbs vs. drugs is that it is able to
do two major things at the same time. An herbal formula
may strengthen the immune, circulatory, and energetic
systems and also, at the same time, release the excess
conditions which manifest as symptoms. Depending on a
patient's condition, Dr. Harounian will choose different
properties of herbs and flower essences to create a
formula to address patients' particular needs. Western
medications often control the symptoms of an illness but
do not alter the disease process. In contrast, herbology
and flower essences, when used properly, can treat the
underlying conditions that cause the illness or health
condition.
Flower Essence
Flower Essence supports the individual by stimulating
greater awareness of our inner life, and building a
vital bridge between the realms of the body, soul, and
spirit. The theory of flower essence is that diseases
that people experience are the result of imbalances. By
rectifying imbalances, healing would result on every
level. Flower remedies act to balance emotional and
spiritual well-being. Essences work on an energetic
level. It is essential to find the proper essences that
resonate with one's energy field.
Cleansingand
Detoxification
Killing parasites, removing pollutants, clearing
gallstones and kidney stones is an effective way of
empowering your body to clean and heal itself. Most
individuals would benefit from detoxifying themselves of
the pollutants associated with everyday living. Dr.
Harounian uses the food sensitivity test, the infrared
sauna, clay baths, acupuncture detox, flower essences,
homeopathic formulas, herbal and clay products, and ear
conning as a part of her complete detox treatment.
Cupping
Cupping is a treatment technique that involves the
application of glass cups with heat to create suction,
thereby pulling toxins out of the body and stimulating
local blood circulations. By recruiting red and white
blood cells and stimulating blood flow to an area,
allowing metabolism of nitrogenous wastes and reducing
and eliminating pain and inflammation. It is effective
for body aches, muscle pain, and relieving colds.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion is a procedure of burning the herb mugwort
over specific acupuncture points. Moxibustion is used to
strengthen the entire energy system and increase
circulation. It is an effective therapy for chronic
fatigue, infertility, prolapsed uterus, diarrhea,
cramps, and the turning of a breech fetus before labor.
Ear Coning
Aromatic herbal hollow cones are gently placed inside
the opening of the ear canal as smoke fills the cone. It
acts like a vacuum, removing ear wax debris, and sinus
congestion. This technique also works on the subtle body
by reactivating and spinning the chakras. Your head will
feel lighter and your senses heightened.
Hot Stone Therapy
The warm stones expand the blood vessels, pushing blood
and unwanted waste materials through the body and
increasing lymph flow. This has a sedative effect on the
nervous system. The heat from the stones helps to
regulate the blood flow. It also helps to rid the
muscles of toxic waste products which build up from
stress and bad lifestyle habits. Hot Stone Therapy may
be beneficial for: muscular aches, pains, sprains, and
strains, back pain and stiff joint, stress, anxiety, and
tension.

The fact that acupuncture has been used for thousands of years on a sizable segment of the world's population may make acupuncture the most widely practiced and thoroughly tested medicine in history. "The aim of acupuncture
is not to eliminate or alleviate symptoms, but more importantly, to treat the underlying cause and improve the quality of life." Acupuncture is a process which involves the insertion of pre-sterilized, nontoxic, and disposable fine needles into points that are strategic conductors of electromagnetic signals. In California,
Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine are the newest primary health care professions. The World Health Organization has found that one of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse side effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same condition and the
benefits of acupuncture are very high.
The following information has been compiled by the World
Health Organization
1. Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which
acupuncture has been proved-through controlled trials-to
be an effective treatment:
Adverse
reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy
Allergic rhinitis (including hay fever)
Biliary colic
Correction of Malposition of fetus
Depression (including depressive neurosis and
depression following stroke)
Dysentery, acute bacillary
Dysmenorrhoea, primary
Epigastralgia, acute (in peptic ulcer, acute and
chronic gastritis, and gastrospasm)
Essential Hypertension
Facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders)
Headache
Induction of labour
Knee pain
Leukopenia
Low back pain
Morning sickness
Nausea and vomiting
Neck pain
Pain in dentistry (including dental pain and
temporomandibular dysfunction)
Periarthritis of shoulder
Postoperative pain
Primary Hypotension
Renal colic
Rheumatoid arthritis
Sciatica
Stroke
Tennis elbow
Sprain
Back pain is very common reason people seek help and
health care. Many working days and numerous hours of
activity and fun are lost or wasted every year because
of back pain.
Some of the Common Causes of Back Pain Treated
with Acupuncture
One of the main causes of lower back pain are strains (a
rip or tear in the muscle caused by sudden force) and
sprains (overstretching one or more of the ligaments in
the back). This can happen from an injury, bad-poor
posture, improper lifting, over exercising, like weight
lifting, a fall, a car accident, etc.
Another source of back pain comes from a herniated disc.
A herniated disc, is a disc that projects out from its
place between two vertebrae. I had a herniated disc
injury from a Thai massage: the masseur was walking on
my back, and the disc just popped out!
2. Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which the
therapeutic effect of acupuncture has been shown but for
which further proof is needed:
Abdominal pain (in acute gastroenteritis or due to
gastrointestinal spasm)
Acne vulgaris
Alcohol dependence and detoxification
Bell’s palsy
Bronchial asthma
Cancer pain
Cardiac neurosis
Cholecystitis, chronic, with acute exacerbation
Cholelithiasis
Competition stress syndrome
Craniocerebral injury, closed
Diabetes mellitus, non-insulin-dependent
Earache
Epidemic haemorrhagic fever
Epistaxis, simple (without generalized or local
disease)
Eye pain due to subconjunctival injection
Female infertility
Facial spasm
Female urethral syndrome
Fibromyalgia and fasciitis
Gastrokinetic disturbance
Gouty arthritis
Hepatitis B virus carrier status
Herpes zoster (human (alpha) herpesvirus 3)
Hyperlipaemia
Hypo-ovarianism
Insomnia
Labour pain
Lactation, deficiency
Male sexual dysfunction, non-organic
Ménière disease
Neuralgia, post-herpetic
Neurodermatitis
Obesity
Opium, cocaine and heroin dependence
Osteoarthritis
Pain due to endoscopic examination
Pain in thromboangiitis obliterans
Polycystic ovary syndrome (Stein-Leventhal syndrome)
Postextubation in children
Postoperative convalescence
Premenstrual syndrome
Prostatitis, chronic
Pruritus
Radicular and pseudoradicular pain syndrome
Raynaud syndrome, primary
Recurrent lower urinary-tract infection
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy
Retention of urine, traumatic
Schizophrenia
Sialism, drug-induced
Sjögren syndrome
Sore throat (including tonsillitis)
Spine pain, acute
Stiff neck
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction
Tietze syndrome
Tobacco dependence
Tourette syndrome
Ulcerative colitis, chronic
Urolithiasis
Vascular dementia
Whooping cough (pertussis)
3. Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which there
are only individual controlled trials reporting some
therapeutic effects, but for which acupuncture is worth
trying because treatment by conventional and other
therapies is difficult:
Deafness
Chloasma
Hypophrenia
Colour blindness
Irritable colon syndrome
Small airway obstruction
Choroidopathy, central serous
Pulmonary heart disease, chronic
Neuropathic bladder in spinal cord injury
4. Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which
acupuncture may be tried provided the practitioner has
special modern medical knowledge and adequate monitoring
equipment:
Coma
Convulsions in infants
Diarrhea in infants and young children
Encephalitis, viral, in children, late stage
Coronary heart disease (angina pectoris)
Paralysis, progressive bulbar and pseudobulbar
Breathlessness in chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease
